The course introduces a student to Portuguese literature from their beginnings up to and including 18th century: chronology, authors, work.
Portuguese literature
The Middle Ages: the definition of the term in a historical, cultural and literary sense; beginnings of Portuguese literacy and literature (cantares de amigo, de amor cantares, cantares de escárnio e maldizer).
Renaissance: The first Portuguese humanism, the Renaissance and Mannerism in the European context. Luis de Camoes, Sá de Miranda. A. Ferreira, Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos, Gil Vicente.
Baroque: defining the concept; Padre António Viera and Francisco Manuel de Melo.
