German Literature I
Objectives and competences
- Awareness of the complexity of the notion of culture and perception of one's own and foreign culture and identity. - Learning about various aspects of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and raising awareness of the German cultural sphere through familiarity with German history. - Raising awareness about the similarities and differences between the Slovene and German social systems. - Recognizing canonized authors in the history of literature of the German-speaking area. - Familiarity with literary movements and events in individual German-speaking countries and in Slovenia: intercultural parallels. - Understanding and individual reflection on literature; encouraging students to read works in the original. - Acquiring critical evaluation skills. - The ability to understand the complex interconnectedness of society, culture, and literature in the German-speaking areas.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course is divided into two units: a) German society and culture I b) German literature I
German society and culture: - Perceiving one's own and the foreign environment, stereotypes and prejudices, relations between one's homeland and foreign countries. - Selected topics from the current political and social situation in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: geography (towns, landscapes, sights), arts, media, religion, minorities, political and legal system, economy, etc. - Historical overview (the Holy Roman Empire until the unification of Germany and founding of the German Empire in 1871), the meaning and influence of historical events on broader developments in Europe.
German literature: - Beginnings of German literature. - Learning about basic medieval epics and myths. - Connections between medieval German works with the Slovene environment (Parzival, Minnesängers from today's Slovene territory). - Further overview of the literature of the German-speaking areas: Baroque, Enlightenment, Sturm und Drang, Classics, Romanticism.

Enrollment in the first year of Interlingual Communication.
The final grade consists of the average (passing) grade from the two subject areas. The grades for the individual subject areas are:
- German society and culture I: Exam (50 % of the final grade). - German literature I: Exam (the exam also covers home reading; i.e., at least seven works from the reading list provided by the lecturer – 50 % of the final grade).
Grading scale: 6-10 or A-E (positive grade), 1-5 or F (negative grade). The assessment is in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the examination regulations of the Faculty of Arts.
