Slovene-German interlingual communication II

Objectives and competences

Within German Word Formation, students learn about the basics of German word formation, the main procedures involved, and meanings of certain prefixes and suffixes. Emphasis is put on word formative patterns that are frequent in German but quite unproductive in Slovene. Attention is drawn to problems, and possible solutions for translation into Slovene are indicated. On the basis of the knowledge acquired, students will better understand the meaning of German words and more easily, which is especially important in translation. Being familiar with the formation of words and their meaning is, however, clearly very important in any oral or written form of communication in German.

Within Idiomatics and Stylistics, students are familiarized with the basic theoretical concepts and the criteria for identifying phrasal lexemes and their categorization. They learn about German noun and verb word phrases, as well as proverbs and their meaning. They recognize idioms in various communication situations and contexts, collect and categorize them, and by comparing them with equivalent examples from their native language reinforce their phraseological linguistic expression in both languages. The students understand the terms style and stylistics, which play an important role in translation, and learn about interlingual and intercultural differences in various text types.
Within Interlingual Communication from German into Slovene classes, students acquire basic translation skills.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course is divided into two units; students choose 
a) Translation-oriented German Word Formation 
a) Translation-oriented German Idiomatics and Stylistics.


b) Interlingual Communication from German into Slovene is compulsory.

Translation-oriented German word formation:
- the importance of word formation and its connection to other linguistic subjects (especially lexicology); 
- types of morphemes and their meaning;
- arbitrariness and motivation, types of motivation;
- nonce word formation and a contrastive perspective on Slovene;
- word formation procedures and models;
- word formation of noun, adjective, verb, and adverb.
The entire course has a translation orientation, whereby students’ attention is drawn to Slovene equivalents and strategies for adapting German structures to Slovene in the study of word-formational phenomena and principles of word formation.

Translation-oriented German idiomatics and stylistics:
Contrastive phraseme classification and typification, use in various text types and genres, phraseme connotation, distinguishing between the following basic terms: "fully, partially, or non-idiomatized fixed word phrase, saying, proverb, slogan, and phraseme modification in terms of structure and meaning" from an interlinguistic and intercultural point of view; learning about the most well-known or most frequently used phrasemes; defining the basic stylistic concepts: learning about and distinguishing between stylistic elements and figures within individual text types, categorization and typification of styles with regard to text types with special culturally conditioned features relevant for translation practice.
Interlingual communication from German into Slovene:
During interlingual communication exercises the students expand upon their knowledge from the first year, analyze more complex texts of a general nature, familiarize themselves with the basic methods of translation practice, and begin translating easier texts.

Enrollment in the second year of Interlingual Communication.
Previous enrollment in the Slovene-German Interlingual Communication I course.


The final grade consists of the average from  both subjects (Translation-oriented German Word Formation OR Translation-oriented German Idiomatics and Stylistics,  AND Interlingual Communication from German into Slovene). 

To pass, students must get a positive grade in all subjects:
- Translation-oriented German Word Formation: exam (60% of the final grade).
- Translation-oriented German Idiomatics and Stylistics: Seminar paper and exam (together 60% of the final grade).
- Interlingual Communication from German into Slovene: homework or tests (40% of the final grade); the remaining 60% of the grade is obtained in an examination – together 40% of the final grade.
Forms of marking: 6–10 or A-E (passinggrade), 1–5 or F (failing grade). The assessment is in line with the Statute of the University of Ljubljana and the examination regulations of the Faculty of Arts.
