The course is an introduction to Slovene-into-German translation. Students are expected to refine their previously acquired basic translation strategies and adapt and apply them to more complex texts in terms of syntax and meaning; to analyze, form, and translate texts, they learn about text types and basic differences between Slovene and German text-formation norms, and they continue to work with parallel texts and improve their language proficiency.
The course aims to improve comprehension of fairly complex Slovene and German texts featuring advanced syntax, ambiguity, metaphorical meaning, analogies, and cultural and historical references. Students still deal with general purpose texts of various genres. Strict conveying of denotation and connotation is at the core of the course, not neglecting collocation and style, both common sources of errors in encoding.
Particular emphasis is placed on sensitivity to genre and context; text type and target readers' expectations determine the translation strategy.
During the course, students learn about using various reference books, other resources, and other translation tools.
