Fieldwork 1

The course consists of introductory lectures (5 hours), seminar tutorials (30 hours); the final part of the course (120 hours) is carried out as an organised form of field research work in the field and is executed concisely in 12 workdays.
Students learn various techniques and procedures of archaeological excavation, problems of post-deposition, and interdisciplinary discussion of archaeological stratigraphy on selected study cases. Students participate in various forms of project fieldwork, where they are acquainted with and actively participate in its preparation, execution, and evaluation. Special emphasis is placed on the archaeological excavation as the most demanding and the most complex archaeological fieldwork technique.
Students generally participate in all phases of the work and are trained in the execution of all procedures. They are part of the excavation team where they are faced with the definition and discussion of archaeological deposits, gathering of spatial data and documenting, processing of finds and artefacts, and interdisciplinary research which is carried out during the excavations.
Special emphasis is placed on the training of the student for independent decision-making about the research strategy, choice of procedures, and group leadership. Simultaneously, the student takes control over certain phases of the work, oversees parallel activities (working with other field teams, working with visitors), and after the fieldwork is finished prepares the preliminary report of the field research.
