Sociology of Nation and Nationalism

This course deals with the core concepts, definitions and theoretical contributions in the area of studies of nation and nationalism. Its primary focus are modern, primordial and alternative theoretical contributions of such influential social thinkers as: E. Gellner, A. Smith, B. Anderson, E. Hobsbawm, L. Greenfeld, M. Hechter, W. Kymlicka, D. Miller, J. Breuilly, M. Hroch, M. Guibernau and others. Special attention will be paid to the following questions: advantages and consistency of individual tehories and authors, respectively, further, to related concepts which constitute the area of nations and nationalisms: nation-state, right of nations to self-determination, the issue of ethnic minorities and their supra-national protection, national identity, national stereotypes, national conflicts, implications of globalization for nation and nationalism, dillemmas in connection with internationalism and cosmopolitism, and others.
