Study at the Department of Translation

The Department of Translation offers programmes involving Slovene and English, plus either German, French or Italian. As well as in-depth study of language, culture and literature, students become familiar with the latest language and translation technologies, which is essential for every translator and interpreter in the modern information society. Students also acquire the knowledge and skills required for functioning in the contemporary multilingual and multicultural society, which is increasingly dynamic and digital.
Our graduates can progress to a wide range of careers in the fast-growing language industry and other fields requiring a good knowledge and understanding of foreign languages and cultures. They work as translators and interpreters for institutions across Europe; they are employed at various representative offices and in international companies; they also find employment in other fields, such as international communications and public relations; many of our graduates also pursue a research career.

Types of study

At the undergraduate level, the department offers a three-year course in Interlingual Communication (BA). At the postgraduate level, students can choose between a two-year MA in Interpreting, an MA in Translation and two joint MA programmes with Graz (German) and Paris (French). There is also a PhD degree in Translation Studies.

Quality Control and Assurance

The MA Programmes in Translation and Interpreting of the University of Ljubljana are the only translator and interpreter training programmes in Slovenia that meet the highest international quality standards. They have been assessed by the International Permanent Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters CIUTI, by the international consortium EMCI established by the interpreting service of the European Commission and the European Parliament and by the network EMT at the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission. The department is also a founding and associate member of EULITA, the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association.
